Fight Hunger & Pay for Education with AmeriCorps Service
Two Programs, One Goal
Hunger Free America sponsors two AmeriCorps national service programs, all of which enable participants to serve the country while fighting hunger. Each program provides a small living allowance and educational award ($5,645 for a full year of service; less for a shorter stint) that can be used to pay back old student loans or for graduate school. What People are Saying About Our AmeriCorps Programs
“Last year, with the help of our sole AmeriCorps volunteer coordinator, we were able to usher in a stronger program of volunteer service and we now have a database of over 500 volunteers, ready and willing to help out. With her help, we were able to pioneer a completely new program of providing weekend take-home packages for people desperately in need, without having to hire a single additional staff member.”
-Alex Rapaport, Masbia
“As a native New Yorker, I sought a meaningful experience to address health disparities and economic insecurity in my hometown after I graduated college. Instead of sporadic volunteering or entry-level positions at non-profits, I determined a year of service as a VISTA would be a better way to learn about this city’s diverse communities, the network of people and agencies working towards economic security for all, and my place in it all. I couldn’t have imagined how much I’d learn. As a VISTA in the NYCCAH office I’ve had the opportunity to have a real impact on the Strategic Volunteer Program development and to work with incredibly diverse anti-hunger organizations. The support network I have in my supervisor, VISTA leader, and everyone at the Coalition is crucial to my development as a young, nonprofit professional and unparalleled in the other positions I explored.”
-Emily Gargiulo, NYCCAH VISTA
"AmeriCorps enabled me to work when no one else would give me a chance. The program has helped me learn valuable skills that have ultimately led to a full-time position. I am honored to have served two terms in the Anti-Hunger and Empowerment Corps."
-Vanna Valdez, AmeriCorps Member 2010-2011
